This page is dedicated to software for developing Java applets and applications; you'll find various
supporting tools on their own separate page.
Here you'll find anything ranging from CASE tools that support Java (some can generate Java, some
can even do round-trip engineering) to simple code-level editors. Then there are true IDEs: integrated development environments that usually include an easy way to build graphical interfaces but do a lot more than that: in general, they
have a code editor and include an applet viewer; often they include a class browser and a debugger as well.
In contrast, the Authoring tools are more like simple Drag & Drop environments where you just define what you
want an applet to do, without having to write code. The newer ones support JavaBeans and allow you to "wire" Beans together.
Several tools listed here support JavaBeans (and come with a collection of them); you'll find more JavaBeans
links on their own page.
Some development environments include a copy of the JDK (or their own equivalent); if not, you'll have to download the
The JavaTM Developers Kit separately. (This is version 1.0.2 - see below for the release version of 1.1!)
