| About this page |
More and more tools for developing Java applets (and applications) are appearing, and more and more also support JDK 1.1 and/or JavaBeans which have a page of their own on this site - so have a look there as well!. This page has undergone the same treatment as the books page previously: the current page now gives general information about Java development software and contains links to reviews of various products. Then there is a separate page with actual Java Development Environments, ranging from high-end CASE tools to simple code editors and drag and drop authoring tools. The various Java Development Supporting Tools also have their own page, where you'll find things like compilers and decompilers, class libraries and frameworks, testing tools, etc. |

The Development Tools section had become large enough to warrant separating some material into separate pages. |

| Java Development Environments |
Here you'll find anything ranging from CASE tools that support Java (some can generate Java, some can even do round-trip engineering) to simple code-level editors. Then there are true IDEs: integrated development environments that usually include an easy way to build graphical interfaces but do a lot more than that: in general, they have a code editor and include an applet viewer; often they include a class browser and a debugger as well. In contrast, the Authoring tools are more like simple Drag & Drop environments where you just define what you want an applet to do, without having to write code. The newer ones support JavaBeans and allow you to "wire" Beans together. |
| Supporting Tools |
There is a great variety of tools supporting your Java development efforts - whichever development environment you are using. This page is dedicated to those supporting tools. Classification can be difficult here, but I've made a stab at it (listing 'the rest' under Other tools). You'll also find links to Class libraries components and frameworks here, as well as some Algorithms. |
