Marjolein's list of Java Books and Java Book Reviews

We're moving!

This whole site is being moved to a shiny new server - as are all my sites, in fact. Apologies for the bumpy road ahead, but at the end of that road things will become fast and smooth.

Once the site at the new server is ready, this message will automatically disappear!

Meanwhile, you can see how the move is progressing at the status page.

  About this page

So many books... How do you find the right one? To help out a little, I've gathered a whole bunch of on-line book descriptions. Only descriptions that will tell you enough about a book to be able to decide to have a closer look have been included: a pretty picture of the cover and a one-paragraph description does not usually qualify.

Please note that most of these books can be ordered on-line, often right from the description page, and for some of the books there's a complete on-line version available. Not recommended for reading it all on-line, of course, but fine for that quick reference or example, or for a better-founded decision to actually buy the book. Some on-line books include a search function! Printed books, On-line books, CD-ROM books and Book-related pages all have a separate page.

I've also included book reviews, including several lists. This information can be found right on this page.

Some authors also have their own homepages; you'll find several of them on the Java People page.

Some of the symbols you may see on the books pages are specific to these pages; they all serve as a graphical link as well:

Related page Books marked with this symbol have a related or supporting web page.
On-line These are either on-line books or there exists an on-line version of the book (listed on a separate page).

Some of these are commercial sites that sell books; I've included those if they provide an extra service or useful information besides just selling books.

The books section has become so large that some parts have been moved to their own separate pages. On most, the books are listed by title for now - in the near future I'll add a searchable database.

  Printed books

Only printed books that have good on-line descriptions are listed on this easy-to-navigate page; in some cases you can even find several descriptions for the same book. The printed books are listed by title for now - in the near future I'll add a searchable database.

  On-line books

The "unofficial" on-line books have disappeared by now, but there's an even better alternative. More hints on the on-line books page!

  CD-ROM books

While many computer books nowadays come with an accompanying CD-Rom, these "books" have their main content on the CD-Rom, and may be accompanied by a booklet.

  Book-related pages

Here you'll find on-line companions to printed books. The pages differ in their content: from simple errata, to support, to downloadable source code. If you have one of the books mentioned on the Printed books page, or are considering buying one, check these pages!
